Dame Edna is on the move. Although the Tony winner's new show Back with a Vengeance was announced to open at the Broadhurst Theatre in the fall, Broadway.com has learned that it is actually headed to the Music Box Theatre. This switch leaves the Broadhurst free for 700 Sundays… Billy Crystal… A Life in Progress, Crystal's new one-man show that we previously reported was eyeing a run at the Broadway house.
Known for her snazzy gowns and calling everyone "possum," Dame Edna Everage is Barry Humphries' alter-ego and the star of his shows Housewife Superstar, Dame Edna: The Royal Tour, A Night With Dame Edna and Back to My Roots. Dame Edna: The Royal Tour enjoyed a successful run on the Great White Way during the 1999-2000 season, winning a 2000 Special Tony Award For a Live Theatrical Presentation.
Back with a Vengeance will feature back-up dancers known as the "Ednaettes" and Wayne Barker on keyboards. Prior to Broadway, the show will premiere at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco, where it is scheduled to begin a six-week run on August 31. It is expected to keep its previously announced Broadway dates despite the theater change--meaning Back with a Vengeance will begin performances at the Music Box on November 5 in preparation for a November 21 opening.
A spokesperson for Back with a Vengeance could not confirm the Music Box Theater as the show's new home.
